What Are Neck Knives and What Are They Used For?

A neck knife is a small, portable knife worn around the neck on a strap or chain. They are often used as self-defense weapons, as they are easy to access and can be used with one hand.

Neck knives are also popular among outdoor enthusiasts because they can be helpful in a variety of camping, hunting, and fishing tasks.

What Are the Benefits of Owning a Neck Knife?

There are a few key benefits to owning a neck knife.

First, they are small and easy to transport, making them perfect for everyday carrying and being the gray man. They can also be attached to a belt or pack, making them ideal for outdoor adventures.

Second, neck knives are very versatile and can be used for a variety of tasks, both defensive and utilitarian.

Finally, they offer a level of security and peace of mind that you can't find with other types of knives.

Be sure the one you pick feels good in your hand

How to Choose the Right Neck Knife for You?

When choosing a neck knife, it is essential to consider the blade's size, shape, and weight.

You also need to decide what type of handle material you prefer. Some neck knives come with a paracord handle, which can be helpful in survival situations. Keep in mind that the paracord will absorb some fluid when wet though, which may be a disadvantage depending on the purpose of your knife.

It is also essential to consider the sheath that comes with the knife. Some neck knives come with a hard plastic sheath, while others include a Kydex sheath or a paracord lanyard.

Don't forget to check the accessibility of your neck knife. After all, if you can't get to it, it won't do you any good.

Finally, you need to decide how much you are willing to spend on a neck knife. You can find quality neck knives for as little as $25, but high-end options are available that cost several hundred dollars.

Tips on How to Care for Your Knife

Just like any other piece of gear, you need to care for your neck knife properly to ensure that it lasts a lifetime.

  1. Make sure to clean and dry your knife after each use. This will help prevent corrosion and rust.
  2. Apply a light coat of oil to the blade after cleaning. This will help protect it from the elements.
  3. Store your knife in a safe place when not in use. A hard plastic sheath is ideal, as it will protect you and your blade.
  4. Keep your blade sharp and ready to cut. Here's an excellent article on how to sharpen a knife, with and without a sharpener.

Finally, practice using your knife regularly so that you are proficient with it in a self-defense situation.

The Bottom Line on Neck Knives

Neck knives can be an excellent self-defense tool. And as with any self-defense tool, they are only as good as their quality and the person using them.

So, do your research here, and buy the neck knife that best fits your needs. Then, once you have it, find quality training, so you know how to keep yourself and others safe!

I’ve been wearing the CRKT Minimalist Bowie neck knife for years. I swapped out the cord for the Titan cord. It’s an awesome little knife. Fortunately, I’ve never had to use it, so it’s still sharp as the day I got it. This is one of those EDC that everyone should have.

I have the other Kershaw neck knife. Easy to wear and has good balance too! All Kershaw blades have a great fit & finish!

    Hi Duff,

I actually took the cordage for the CRKT S.P.E.W. EDC Fixed Blade and threaded it back through the sheath to allow me to loop it onto my belt. I then tuck the “tail” of extra cordage down into my pocket so I can always carry around my neck if I wanted to.
